Micro-Nutrients – The Unsung Heroes
I can barely count all of the fad diets that have come along over the years. In fact, I don’t think anyone really can. There have been so many.
Aside from the fact that they don’t work, there is one thing that the majority of these diets have in common. They all seem to focus on macro-nutrients vs. micro-nutrients.
To understand what I’m talking about, a couple of quick definitions will help.
When I refer to macro-nutrients, I am talking about protein, carbohydrates (ie. carbs), and fats. When I refer to micro-nutrients, I’m referring to vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phyto-chemicals, and all of the tiny nutritious compounds in our foods that help our cells and tissues stay healthy and thrive.
One of the reasons why fad diets fail so often is because they fail to address the importance of getting enough micro-nutrients. They focus mostly on which ratio of fats to carbs to proteins you should be eating.
While those considerations are important, forgetting to consider the nutrient density of the foods we are eating in favor of focusing on proteins, carbs, and fats sets us up for failure. Its like only thinking about what kind of tires we have on our car and what color the paint job is and forgetting about what kind of fuel we’re using.
