Micro-Nutrients – The Unsung Heroes

I can barely count all of the fad diets that have come along over the years. In fact, I don’t think anyone really can. There have been so many.

Aside from the fact that they don’t work, there is one thing that the majority of these diets have in common. They all seem to focus on macro-nutrients vs. micro-nutrients.

To understand what I’m talking about, a couple of quick definitions will help.

When I refer to macro-nutrients, I am talking about protein, carbohydrates (ie. carbs), and fats. When I refer to micro-nutrients, I’m referring to vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phyto-chemicals, and all of the tiny nutritious compounds in our foods that help our cells and tissues stay healthy and thrive.

One of the reasons why fad diets fail so often is because they fail to address the importance of getting enough micro-nutrients. They focus mostly on which ratio of fats to carbs to proteins you should be eating.

While those considerations are important, forgetting to consider the nutrient density of the foods we are eating in favor of focusing on proteins, carbs, and fats sets us up for failure. Its like only thinking about what kind of tires we have on our car and what color the paint job is and forgetting about what kind of fuel we’re using.

The Benefits of a Raw Vegetable Diet

Few people entertain the prospect of a raw vegetable diet, and for good reason. Raw vegetables do not have an appealing taste, thus many people are likely to dismiss them. Most people opt for processed or cooked vegetables instead, which are considered to have a better flavor. While this may be true in some cases, their nutritional value does not measure up to that of raw.

If you are one of those people who balk at the thought of a raw vegetable diet, think again because based on studies they have a higher nutritional value than cooked or processed ones.

Processed vegetables are normally changed from their natural state for purposes of safety. Processed foods have chemicals and preservatives, which are meant to increase their shelf life. This reduces their nutritional value. In the case of cooked vegetables, nutritionists claim that heat destroys the vitamins and minerals in them. Exposure to heat also denatures the vegetable enzymes, which are beneficial for metabolic processes in the body.

3 Top Tips For Healthy Meals

When we are young, the concept of healthy meals is very black and white. Vegetables are good and fast food is bad. Cleaning your plate is good and being wasteful is bad. As we grow up, no one bothers to tell us that, in reality, individual foods are neither good nor bad- only too much food is bad. In fact, the idea that we need to clean our plates has gotten us into big trouble.

As it turns out, nutrition isn’t black and white at all. On a physiological level, it can be extremely complicated. Sometimes we do all the right things and still can’t seem to manage our weight, our energy, or our health. Of course, if we could only live on the Biggest Loser Ranch we wouldn’t have any of the obstacles that make eating healthy meals so complicated and impractical in the real world.

If only there were a few simple rules that made eating healthy simple?!

The good news is, there are three simple tips that can make healthy meals more of a no brainer. After all, we don’t all have the time or money to study nutrition, to visit a certified nutritionist, or to order all our meals packaged and ready-to-eat.

Nutrition Can Affect Your Hair – For Better or Worse

“What you eat is what you get” is true for overall physical and mental health, especially your hair. Just as your skin loses its glow on account of poor health, your hair also loses its shine and becomes dull and lifeless, if it does not get adequate nutrition for its growth.

Graying hair or the tendency to baldness is mostly genetic and hereditary. You can pin the blame on your forefathers but by large, the health of your hair depends on good nutrition and proper blood circulation.

Hair loss

Hair is made up of protein and without proteins you hair will not grow. A low protein diet will cause your hair to change its color, texture and thickness. When you enrich your diet with protein, your hair will start looking thick and lustrous again. Dairy products like milk, soy milk, cheese, yogurt, peanut butter, eggs, chicken, fish, lean meats, legumes, lentils, beans, grains, nuts and seeds are protein rich foods.

If you have an iron deficiency, your hemoglobin levels will consequently be low, reducing your blood’s capacity to supply oxygen to all the parts of your body, including your hair follicles. Beef, liver, steak, eggs, clams, spinach, potatoes, dry fruits, whole wheat and broccoli are rich sources of iron.
